As screen couples go, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are the most handsome, sexiest and hottest Hollywood couple by far. So, it would be obvious that this no-brainer movie MR. AND MRS. SMITH will hit number one at the box-office in its opening weekend.
Pitt and Jolie play MR. & MRS. SMITH, a couple who are, unknown to each other skilled assassins, at the marriage counselor’s office in the beginning of the movie. They are having marital problems. They are bored. Only when they assigned to kill each other and then team up against the ‘company’ does the sex and marriage fly again. Amidst the hullabaloo, director Doug Liman (GO, THE BOURNE IDENTITY) adds in well executed car chases, pyrotechnic blow-ups a dozen a minute and fights galore. Pitt and Jolie put in their two cents worth with sexual innuendo (the tango dance at a fancy restaurant) and insults to the hilt.
The question whether the film is any good or whether the (predictable and clichéd) plot counts really does not matter. What makes the difference is whether one adores Jolie and/or Pitt. Imagine your most annoying Hollywood actors playing MR AND MRS SMITH and you will hate this movie. That is the bottom line.
MR. & MRS. SMITH delivers the best of what Hollywood offers – stylish and empty kitsch. For me, I only laughed once (at Vince Vaughn’s mother comment) and nodded off more than a dozen times.
