From the screen writing team Sandro Petreglia and Stefano Rulli that brought the hit Italian TV series THE BEST OF YOUTH (released outside Italy in 2 3-hour movies parts 1 and 2) comes a condensed form of familial conflict amidst political unrest.
The story unfolds from the point of view of rebellious Accio (Elio Germano) who joins a reactionary fascist group. This sparks sibling rivalry with his handsome charismatic brother, Manico (Riccardo Scarmarcio), a prime mover of the local communist party. Worst still, Accio has the hots for Manico’s girlfriend, Francesca (Diane Fleri).
Director Lucheti captures the spirit and trappings of the small Italian town where the film is set as well as the best of youth. The use of music – familiar Italian melodies of the times (I remember myself hearing them on the radio when I was younger) create the 60’s and 70’s atmosphere. Both actors portraying the brothers are convincing. The frequent use of close ups on the actors faces show them more as adults. It is when the camera moves back that the audience is reminded that Accio and Manico are still youth coming of age.
Lucheti’s film is extremely watchable for the constant humour he puts in throughout his film. The start has the young Accio going to seminary school to great comedic effect. On wishes Lucheti would have cut down the material as he tries to cram too much in a 1 ¾ hour film. This is evident at the very start of the film where so much happens during the opening credits.
The good thing about this film is that one need not sit through six hours of film to experience the celluloid form of Petreglia and Rulli’s work. But, MY BROTHER IS AN ONLY CHILD fails to achieve the punch and scope of a lengthy 6 hour work.
