PAX AMERICANA AND THE WEAPONIZATION OF SPACE (Canada/Fr 2009) ***
Directed by Denis Delestrac
The Latin term PAX AMERICANA refers to the peace keeping of the world as a result of the predominant presence of the U.S. In the informative documentary by Denis Delestrac, the abuse by the U.S. in space is the topic. Using interviews, old footage and shots in a space military camp, director Delestrac tells his story and makes his point.
As far as documentaries go, PAX AMERICANA serves its purpose. It states its case, goes on to prove that there is trouble in paradise, in this case the space above the planet and show what the audience might be able to do about it.
Delestrac is quite gung-go at proving that the U.S. Missile Defense is a hoax and more of an Offence. His information is exhaustive and can prove quite tiring to the viewer at times. The film side steps to a few other issues like debris in outer space. The film could do with a few more high points like President Osama’s speech: “I will cut the weaponization of space.” But the words of one expert that it is not 10 but 75 years too late set the overall tone of the film.
