TRAITOR is the story of a secret Muslim agent Samir Horn (Don Cheadle) hired to infiltrate a terrorist group. Samir works a dangerous thankless job, forming unlikely alliances often driving him close to being killed when discovered. TRAITOR refers to his betrayal of his terrorist brothers as he completes what he has been hired to do.
More known as the scriptwriter for the disaster flick, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, Jeffrey Nachmanoff directs TRAITOR as an action flick rather than a terrorist drama or post 9/11 political or social statement. The film does contain the obligatory debate on terrorist acts as argued from both sides. But other films dealing with this topic RENDITION and REDACTED both box-office flops were better made and served their purpose. Even as an actioneer, TRAITOR fails to excite. At one point midway during the film, Amir’s immediate superior, Cater (Jeff Daniels) – the only one in the special operative who knows of Amir’s identity is shot and left for dead, the audience knows that TRAITOR is a cheap ineffective rip-off of THE DEPARTED or rather INFERNAL AFFAIRS. Too bad that stars like Cheadle, Daniels and Guy Pearce cannot save this film. The exotic filming locations (London, Nice etc.) at least provide a pleasant distraction.
